Sao Paulo, Brazil The Upcoming Tech Center?

By gloriay On April 13, 2012 · 4 Comments · In Business

Sao Paolo at  #8 as one of the “most active startup ecosystems around the world“(above Paris?) I somehow missed a few years in Brazil’s development. Have not heard of anything “happening” in Sao Paolo.

Another surprise “Work Ethic: Companies in Silicon Valley work 35% more than companies in New York City. In Silicon Valley teams work 9.5 hours a day on average vs. 8 hours in London and 7 in New York City” .

Having lived next to Amazon and Microsoft….10 hour work days seem pretty standart around here. I always stereotyped New Yorkers as the crazy workaholics, so if we on the west coast worked 10 hour days, I assumed they must be working 14 hour days. I also assumed that San Francisco offered better living conditions then New York because it offered a more balanced life and in New York there is no balance. Interesting to see them say that an average New Yorker’s work day in a tech company is only 7 hours/day.

Sao Palo is the silicon valley of South America. It is amazing the number of companies that are opening up offices there, especially those in the hosting industry. Not surprisingly.br and .ar, the country code extension for Brazil and Argentina, are in the Top Ten for ccTLD registrations #8 & #9 respectively.

Sao Paulo is ridiculously expensive and it takes forever to set up a business in Brazil and you need a PhD to do the taxes. Lots of growth here in SP but most of it is in natural resources (sold to China), though the government is trying valiantly to subsidize various tech industries.

Thats interesting. If you come back please expand. They are trying to grow a “silicon valley” in Russia as well, but the infrastructure is not there yet. http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/12/can-russia-build-a-silicon-valley/
